With gas prices continuing to surge, it’s hard not to keep you car in the garage and invest in a bicycle. But, just in case you can’t get by without a car, here are some budget-saving tips on how not to drain your bank account while filling up at the pump.

Check your tire pressure

Many of you may not know this, but making sure your tires are adequately inflated saves money on gas. It’s best to check on your tires first thing in the morning, because that is the most accurate way to see the correct pressure gauged when it’s cooler outside. Or even before you start driving, no matter the time of day, just as long as the tires aren’t hot. This can make a huge difference in gas mileage for your vehicle.

Don’t idle for too long

If you are waiting for someone or say if you’re at a long red light, turn off your car so you don’t waste gas. Also, if using remote start in the morning, if the weather isn’t too unbearable where you would have to warm up your car, then don’t.

Combining trips

Need to take that last minute trip to the store for coffee so you have it first thing in the morning for when you wake up? Try to combine that grocery trip with another errand you have to run. Unnecessary trips now cost more money. Maybe consider going to the store on the way home from work since you’re out anyways.

Use apps like Gas Buddy

Utilizing apps like Gas Buddy can be a huge money saver, imperatively if you live in the city or high-traffic suburban areas. Although, beware of the number of miles that it takes to get that cheaper gas deal, because it may not be worth it if it’s a 15-mile drive out of your way.

Consider carpooling

For those that don’t have the luxury to work from home, try to find out which coworkers live near you and consider taking turns a few days each week carpooling together. Those few days you don’t use your car will save you an ample amount of money each week.

Walk instead of driving

Especially if you live in the city and if the weather is nice enough. Not only will you save on gas money, but as an added bonus you are staying active and getting that much needed cardio.
